SICOM-TSR20 Holds Around 260 Cents as Rally Begins to Stall Amid Thai Supply Disruptions

SICOM-TSR20 Holds Around 260 Cents as Rally Begins to Stall Amid Thai Supply Disruptions

Medan, October 6, 2026 — Natural rubber futures remained around the psychological level of 260 US cents per kilogram on Tuesday (October 6). However, after posting a new closing high the previous day, prices showed signs of losing momentum.

As of 4:36 p.m. WIB, SICOM-TSR20 for the November contract stood at 260.03 cents/kg, down slightly by 0.1 cent. The price remained very close to Monday's (October 5) close of 260.4 cents/kg, indicating that the market was essentially moving within the same range.

The movement suggests that after a prolonged rally, the market is entering a consolidation phase at elevated levels. There is no strong selling pressure yet, but neither is there sufficient fresh momentum to push prices decisively beyond the 260-cent area.

Yesterday's Break Above 260 Cents, Today the Market Pauses

Monday's session was an important one for the rubber market. SICOM-TSR20 closed at 260.4 cents/kg, gaining 2.6 cents, or around 1.01 percent.

The increase extended a rally that has been underway since late September. Prices, which were still at 250 cents on September 29, jumped to 258.7 cents on September 30, then reached 257.8 cents on October 2 before finally breaking above 260 cents on October 5.

As a result, SICOM-TSR20 has gained approximately 43 percent since the beginning of the year, rising from 181.7 cents/kg on January 2 to 260.4 cents/kg at the close on October 5.

Such a strong increase makes the 260-cent level particularly important. The market is now not only looking for opportunities to move higher, but also testing whether this level can establish itself as a new support zone.

Why Has the Market Stalled This Afternoon?

Several factors are preventing prices from extending Monday's gains.

First, China's markets remain closed. SHFE and INE rubber trading is suspended during the National Day holiday, meaning that one of the major markets normally influencing rubber sentiment in Asia is not providing fresh direction. This has resulted in thinner trading conditions and may contribute to greater volatility.

Second, the market is facing the psychologically important 260-cent level. After prices reached this level, some market participants had an incentive to lock in profits. Such selling can limit further gains without necessarily signaling a bearish trend reversal.

Third, weaker crude oil prices are acting as a restraint. Natural rubber competes with synthetic rubber, which is derived from oil-based feedstocks. When oil prices decline, the cost pressure on synthetic rubber also eases, slightly reducing the relative support for natural rubber prices.

Fourth, the market appears to be waiting for clearer developments on the supply side. Without fresh evidence of more severe production disruptions, traders may be reluctant to chase prices higher after such a strong rally.

Thai Rain Remains a Key Support Factor

Although today's price movement has been relatively flat, the fundamental factors supporting rubber prices remain in place.

Thailand is still facing adverse weather conditions. Meteorological warnings in early October continue to point to heavy to very heavy rainfall in several areas, along with flood risks. Such conditions could disrupt tapping and latex collection activities.

For the rubber market, prolonged rainfall is important because tapping operations cannot proceed normally when plantations are excessively wet. If disruptions persist, raw material supplies could tighten and provide additional support to prices.

Flooding is also a concern because its impact extends beyond plantations to industrial activity and transportation. This has kept the market focused on the possibility of short-term supply disruptions.

Medium-Term Fundamentals Remain Supportive

Beyond weather-related issues, the natural rubber market continues to face supply constraints that cannot be resolved quickly.

Natural rubber production cannot be increased instantly. Rubber trees require years before they become productive. Therefore, when production disruptions occur in major producing countries, new plantations cannot immediately replace the lost supply.

The ageing of rubber trees and the need for replanting are also longer-term concerns. On the demand side, rubber remains essential to the tire and automotive industries. As vehicle and tire demand remains resilient, demand for natural rubber continues to provide an underlying source of support.

However, positive fundamentals do not mean that prices will rise every day. With prices already at elevated levels, the market needs fresh evidence of tighter supply or stronger demand to sustain the rally.

Macroeconomic Factors Also Provide Some Support

In addition to weather and supply conditions, market sentiment has received some support from changing expectations regarding US interest-rate policy following weaker economic data.

Expectations that further rate increases may be limited can be supportive for commodities because pressure from tighter monetary policy is reduced.

However, this factor is less important for rubber than supply conditions in Thailand. For the rubber market at present, weather, production, tire-industry activity, oil prices and China's trading activity remain the more direct factors to watch.

Has 260 Cents Become the Market Peak?

There is not yet enough evidence to draw that conclusion.

In fact, the fact that prices remained at 260.03 cents this afternoon after closing at 260.4 cents yesterday is significant. It suggests that the market has not seen aggressive selling despite prices having risen sharply.

The key question now is whether SICOM-TSR20 can establish a firm base above 260 cents.

If prices remain around 259–260 cents and subsequently break through 262 cents, the market could have room to move toward 263–265 cents/kg.

Conversely, if prices repeatedly fail to move beyond 261–262 cents and then fall below 258 cents, the likelihood of consolidation would increase. The 255–256 cent area would become an important zone to watch if the correction deepens.

Technical Outlook: 262–265 Cents Remains Possible

Based on the year-to-date price series, the broader SICOM-TSR20 trend continues to show an upward pattern. Following the correction from 256.2 cents on September 25 to 250 cents on September 29, prices quickly recovered to 260.4 cents on October 5.

From a simple technical perspective, 260 cents has now become an important pivot area.

For October 6 trading, if prices remain around 259–260 cents, a range of 259–262 cents/kg remains possible. A strong break above 262 cents could open the way toward 263–265 cents/kg.

On the downside, a break below 258 cents could trigger a correction toward 255–256 cents/kg. If selling pressure becomes significantly stronger, the 252–254 cent area could become the next potential correction target.

Under current conditions, the most reasonable scenario is not another sharp daily surge, but rather consolidation around 258–262 cents with a still-positive bias.

Technical disclaimer: This analysis is based on the available price data and represents a technical interpretation, not a certainty about future market direction. Commodity prices can change rapidly due to weather, production conditions, industrial demand, oil prices, exchange rates, trade policies, global economic conditions and geopolitical developments.

SICOM-TSR20 Enters a Direction-Defining Phase

Today's movement shows that the rubber market has not lost its underlying strength, but it is beginning to require a new catalyst.

Rain and flooding in Thailand continue to provide fundamental reasons for prices to remain elevated. At the same time, China's market holiday, weaker oil prices and potential profit-taking have made further gains less straightforward than in previous sessions.

For this reason, 260 cents is now a crucial level. If prices can hold above it and subsequently break through decisively, the market could begin a new move toward 263–265 cents. However, repeated failures to break through this area would increase the possibility of consolidation or a healthy correction.

For now, market conditions are best described as “bullish but beginning to stall.” The trend has not reversed, but after an extended rally, the market needs a fresh catalyst to continue moving higher.
